Colour Palettes

Colour Palettes. One of my favourite nature activities and so simple.

What you will need:

  • Colour samples (These can be as expensive as the Montessori colour palettes or as cheap as paint samples from a DIY store / laminated pieces of coloured card)
  • A range of flowers / plants / natural objects

This is a great activity for getting children to notice the different colours in nature and for their language development. For a young toddler, I would give only one shade of a colour and see what they can match to each one. Then introduce the concept of light and dark, and finally a range of shades.

For an older child, I would give a variety of shades and talk about which is closest to what they find. This could lead on to painting their own nature pictures using the shades they’ve found or experimenting by creating different shades of a colour.

Let me know what activities and conversations this lead onto for you. Enjoy!
