“What the hand does the mind remembers” – Maria Montessori
Practical life has always been an aspect that P has taken most interest in. For as long as I can remember she has been observing and copying chores around the house. So it only seemed natural to start offering her the chance to join me in the kitchen and contribute towards our meals.
We have made it part of our weekly rhythm to bake together every Monday. P loves knowing this and helps choose what we are going to make together. I plan our food for the entire month so I can coincide easy meals or extras to fit in with this so we are not spending extra on ingredients or baking for the sake of baking.

So today we tried Jam tarts for the first time. I have to admit now that they didn’t come out exactly as we were expecting but they tasted delicious! P gave them a “mmm mmm mmmmm”.
Here is the recipe that we tried:
350g plain flour
3 teaspoons caster sugar
175g unsalted butter
120ml chilled water
Jam (P chose apricot)
- Add flour, sugar and butter to a food processor (we left out the salt) and mix until coarse crumbs form. Add the water gradually until a ball is formed. Chill the pastry for 30 minutes.
- Grease your baking tray (we used butter) and roll out the pastry on a floured surface until it is thin. Cut out rounds with a cutter and place into the tray.
- Bake at 180°C for 10 minutes. Remove and spoon a teaspoon of jam onto each tart. Put back in the oven for an additional 10 minutes.
- Cool on a wire rack.
And the result…

I will continue to add our recipes under Kitchen Contributions as part of a mini-series on the blog. Does anyone have another tried and tested recipe that they would recommend?
