What We Have Been Up To This Autumn: Part 1

“And all at once, summer collapsed into fall.” – Oscar Wilde

I love Autumn. The colours. The sharpness in the morning air. The darker evenings.

With the cooler days, many people find this is when they would rather stay indoors wrapped up, drinking a hot chocolate (who blames them!) but there are so many autumnal activities you can do.

So get the jumpers and wellies ready – here are a few autumnal activities we have been up to:

Autumn Walk

The most obvious activity and yet the cheapest and the easiest. Don’t be put off by how young your child is or how old, dig out the warm, waterproof clothing, pop on your wellies and off you go. There is nothing better than watching them kick through the leaves or jump in puddles.

Pumpkin Picking

We are lucky to be near a ‘pick your own’ this year that is already promoting a healthy crop of pumpkins. I’m really excited to take P along to pick pumpkins this year. This activity could lead onto a wealth of other activities; we will be using ours to try some different recipes on our baking Mondays. Younger toddlers can enjoy looking at pumpkins as part of sensory play, especially the insides!

Autumn Themed Nature Hunt

This is a great time of year to spot certain items in nature; conkers, pine cones and different colour leaves. P has had great fun with just a paper bag to collect her ‘treasures’ but you could easily use a bucket or I have even seen people put elastic bands across a chopping board to pin leaves to on their hunts.

Fireworks

I have always loved Bonfire night. It brings back so many happy childhood memories and was one of the events that G and I used to always go to before having P. We have felt that she has been too young to go before (that and she was always insistent on a 6:30pm bedtime as a baby) but we’re hoping this year might be the year. If not, sparklers will be the next best thing!

Den Building

P has started noticing animals in her books that are in dens or burrows and so I thought it would be a great time to start building dens to play in. Den building offers children so much in terms of collaboration and problem solving so this activity is good for those with older children. We will plan on using poles, pegs and blankets that we have at home (better for little hands!).

Watch out for my next post on what autumnal activities we will be up to closer to home!
